As we approach Thanksgiving, I want you to stop for a second and ask yourself What am I thankful for?  Many of you would say health, job, family, spouse, etc.  Those things are all good, and we should be thankful for those things, but I want you to go deeper.  

When I give a testimony, I always recite this verse:

give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. (1Thess. 5:18  NIV)

After reciting this verse, I would say, ”I’m thankful for Cerebral Palsy.”  That statement would get people’s attention real quick.  Why would I make a statement like that?  It’s simple.  It was God’s Will for me to have Cerebral Palsy.  God’s in control of my life, and I’m good with that.

Since Thanksgiving is next week, I thought we would look at the story of Give Thanks, which was written by Henry Smith, Jr in 1978.

Henry Smith, Jr wrote many worship songs, but this song, Give Thanks, is the most popular.  It has been recorded by many artists.  However, when this song was first discovered, nobody knew who wrote it.  

Henry was born in Crossnore, North Carolina.  When he was a kid, he took piano lessons, while his brother was interested in the  guitar.  He taught himself to play the guitar by reading a manual.  Soon after, he started writing songs.

During his years at King’s College, music became more important to Henry.  He decided that he only wanted to write songs for Christ.

One day in 1978, Henry was at a church in Virginia listening to the Pastor preach a sermon on 2 Corinthians 6:10, which says:

 sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; poor, yet making many rich; having nothing, and yet possessing everything. (NIV)

He wrote the song soon after hearing this sermon.  His future wife, Cindy, sang it several times at church.  There was a military at the church who took the song with them to Germany, where they were currently stationed.  But wait, there’s more!

Henry wrote the song during difficult times.  He was unemployed and had little money.  On top of that, his future was very uncertain because he had a degenerative eye disease.  This disease would eventually leave him legally blind.  He found his strength in 2 Corinthians 12:10, which says:

That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong. (NIV)

In 1986, a friend brought a tape by Integrity Music to Henry that had the song on it.  Integrity Music didn’t know who the author was, so they listed it as “Unknown”.  When Henry contacted them, they told him that had been trying to locate the author because the song had been recorded more than fifty times and published in several songbooks.

Artist Don Moen(who wrote God Will Make a Way) met Henry at an Integrity Music conference in Washington, D.C.  Don played a recording of the song, which was in Russian.  Henry later recalled that he and his wife began to cry due to being overwhelmed.  Don didn’t know they were in the audience.

The song has reached many people all over the world.  It has a powerful message that is based on several verses in Psalms.
